Fall Lighting and Acorns

Sunday afternoon, when all seemed peaceful, we noticed the fall light streaking across the French cabinet in the dining room.

Cozy dining room in fall light streaks

Our cozy little dining room has been called magical by more than one guest. It is where we enjoy dinners or tea time with friends and an occasional pub night with neighbors. There has been much laughter in this loved room over the years. The teapots do bicker during the night and argue about who is the prettiest and who will be picked to serve tea.

A neighbor arranged two giant acorns and oak leaves on the table by our front door a few days ago. They drop into her yard from another neighbor. I took them to my castle shed for a photo on the table while they are still green. They are amazing.

Acorns measure 2.5 inches across

Have you ever seen this type of acorn?

Carmel-by-the-Sea Dogs

Jan has been drawing dogs for his Carmel-by-the-Sea Dogs Notebook and needed more photographs so we went to romp with the dogs for a day. It is always a good time. We parked on Junipero, right across from Bruno’s Market and saw this lovely dog, still wet and looking tired. We asked if he had just been to the beach, yes, he had.

Prissy little dogs are everywhere. They know they are cute.

Then it was off to the beach. We circled around twice at the foot of Ocean Ave. and found a parking spot. One of the first dogs we saw was this proud standard black poodle.

This was the first time to the beach for this exotic dog with pointy ears.

These two little white dogs, one on a leash and the other free got to know each other with doggie introductions, you sniff me and then I’ll sniff you.

This guy was playing fetch and having a good time, he will probably be as worn out as the golden retriever soon.

After a long walk south on the beach we walked up one of the flights of stairs to the Scenic Road walkway and took it back to Ocean Avenue and our car. On the way, we met this cute little guy who had just had a haircut.

Back on Ocean Avenue and the shopping area, we saw lots more dogs.

The well-dressed dog wears a bow tie or a flower on their collar.

This white poodle wears dog shoes so his feet won’t get dirty. We wondered if he is allowed to sit on the sidewalk like dogs do.

It could be said this smooshed-in face is only a face a mother could love. She has a hot pink leash and flower to match. Don’t you think she should have matching polish on those big toenails?

That is just a few of the dogs we saw that day. It is always a fun dog day in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Billy Bob the Tabby Cat

We adore Billy Bob! When our neighbor, Joanne, goes away we eagerly pet sit. He twists and stretches and keeps us laughing with all his positions. In the evenings we read and Billy Bob keeps us company moving from one place to another. We are constantly taking photos of him when we see a comfy pose.

Look at that cute little face with the little black freckles on his nose.

Billy Bob the tabby cat stretched out with a yardstick by him

He stretches full length at times and I go for the yardstick to measure his length, this time his forearms were not stretched out but he’s still almost a yard long.

This looks like kitty yoga.

In between stretches and rests he comes for a good brushing with a rubber brush. It is as therapeutic for me as for him.

Billy Bob looks like limp spaghetti in this photo. He warms our hearts.

Carmel-by-the-Sea Notebook Coming Soon

Jan has been working on lots of small illustrations for a Carmel-by-the-Sea Notebook that is coming soon.

We’ve made a few trips to Carmel to photograph places and things that will be drawn and featured. He is getting close to being finished.

Donna and Jan by The Valentine Statue

Above we are seated on the bench with the bronze sculpture titled The Valentine. It is an expression of lasting love. Look closely and in her hand on her lap she is holding a heart Valentine. You can find the bench at the NW corner of Lincoln and 6th Ave.

Below is a sample of three pages that will be in the new book. Yes, The Valentine statue will be included. Most of the pages in the notebook will be lined but some people have suggested having a few blank pages for drawing. Locations will be listed so people will know where to find the scene.

Jan is nearing the end of the drawings and we will be making one last trip to Carmel soon for some final photographs.

We have been invited to tour a private home that is very unusual and has a lot of history. Can’t wait to tell you about it!
